On Monday, Clacton Coastal Academy had a special visitor. Local author Keith West, writer of the fantasy novel ‘Trapped’, visited the Academy to work with the year 12 Creative Writing class.  The day focused around adapting writing for young children and looking at different openings and engaging titles. The students had the opportunity to work with stimulus provided by Mr West and have him offer them personalised advice about their writing style and content.

A survey completed by the students indicated that they found the opportunity to meet a professional writer was one that they valued and they were keen to listen to advice from someone with a good knowledge of the industry. Some of the students also experimented with openings that they can now develop into a piece that could be submitted for coursework. One student said: “My favourite part of the day was when he read other pieces of work because it was useful to hear different ways of writing. I also enjoyed hearing his feedback on my own writing.”

Principal, Tracey Hemming said: “This was a successful and enjoyable day, the students really benefited from hearing about Keith’s work and the chance to write in a different style to what they might usually choose. We look forward to welcoming Keith back in January when he will work with some of our Key Stage 3 students.”
