Specialisms

Academy Specialisms

Clacton Coastal Academy specialisms are designed to raise the aspirations of all of our students and to impact on the whole of our surrounding community. Unlike many other specialist schools, Clacton Coastal Academy has two specialisms, Media (Arts Specialism) and English (Humanities Specialism). The Academy, with its innovative curriculum and two specialist areas, develops each student’s desire to realise their potential and helps them to foster a ‘can do’ philosophy.

We believe that a combination of English and Media Arts will be a powerful force for school improvement that will help young people in the academy develop skills vital for the 21st Century.

English Specialism

Being competent in English is a pre-requisite for unlocking the potential of all students in the academy and giving them new life chances and choices. The focus on this specialism will help us deliver significantly on raising standards in English for all our young people. We will ensure that as students become more skilled readers and users of language, so they will become more independent learners, better able to take personal control and develop communication skills. Through the insights of the written and spoken word, students will gain a wider appreciation of what it is to live in a multicultural world. With English as its specialism the Academy will be transformational and a key force for regeneration in West Clacton.

Media Arts Specialism

Both campuses are already ideally placed to continue to develop this important area of the Arts. The Media Arts specialism will enable the Academy to further enhance the power of the Arts and harness the power of the ICT base to engage and motivate students, improve stay-on rates and put in place proper progression routes. Like English, the specialism has a clear impact on teaching and learning across all curriculum areas. The engagement between students in the Academy and members of the local community is able to flourish, contributing to increased communication skills, self confidence in students and greater empathy and personal development as young people engage with and understand others better. Basic ICT skills will improve significantly with young people being able to develop high level editing and programming skills, thus enhancing employability in one of the largest employment sectors in the United Kingdom.
